Inserting zoomed in maps in your travel blog

A quick 'how to'

Update: in an effort to move all our How To guides into one spot, and manage changes to them better, we have moved this content to our wiki. Go to 'How To Insert a Zoomed-In Map in your Travel Blog'.

Example of the end result:

From this view a reader can still choose to zoom out, or pan to other parts of the world map if they like, and naturally they can click on one of the stops or photo locations on the trip to be redirected to your travel map page. The zoomed in view they see in your blog will even automatically be shown to them on the travel map page. Go ahead, try clicking on one of the green dots (photos) or on the dot placed at Avarua (trip stop), and view this in action.

Cool! I am really enjoying the map tool and its increasingly enhanced features.

It doesn't appear to work! I've tried three times and the end result is always a world map view. Any suggestions?

Hmm, I don't see any trips at all mapped on your profile: http://www.travellerspoint.com/member_profile.cfm?user=usroyal ? I just tested this for a recent trip of mine and it seems to be working. That example is available at http://sandbox.travellerspoint.com/21/. Let me know if you are using a different username and what browser you are using and I can have a look at it again!

Sam I Am,

I have just posted a draft itinerary in my blog entry "Australian Odyssey 2009" and attempted to inserting the map of Australia in a zoomed in state. As you can see from the blog entry, the end result is a world map view with red dots all over Australia! I have followed the instructions to the letter - any ideas? Thanks.

Hmm, that is very strange indeed! When you click on insert, what does the 'code' in the entry look like?

Just [map=174685] or something more like this:
[map=174685 lat=-27.1428571428571 lon=135.119047619048 zoom=7.56]

In any case, could you try pasting this entire bit of code above into a blog entry and then hitting PREVIEW and see if it zooms in?

What browser are you using (Safari/Internet Explorer etc.)?

Cheers,

Sam

Hello, is it at all possible just to have a picture of your map on your travel site front page, rather than just in a blog entry. i.e. so that the map is only there, rather than being replaced by new blog entries and having to re-load the map with each blog entry?
Thank you!

Annie, there's kind of a long and a short answer to that question :)

The short answer is no.

The longer answer is that I have tested this and have something nearly like what you describe more or less ready to go. It just hasn't been tested properly with all the different templates that are possible. The only difference with your description is that the map would show on all pages, not just the front page.

Does that sound interesting? I could enable it for your blog so you could be one of the testers...

Hi Sam,
That sounds wonderful and I think it would be good to have the map on all pages, as it would give your location for people to see whether they're looking at photos, or entries etc. I've not done much web stuff before, so as long as it isn't too complicated, would be honoured to be a 'tester' if you'd let us?
Thanks very much for your help and reply,
Annie
