A Travellerspoint blog

Jan 2007

One fine January, one fine 2007

More members, but still no Gabonese or San-Marinese...

Thanks either to Peter's fancy redesign, Sam's sudden spate of online attention, or some other unknown and fearfully mysterious reason, Travellerspoint has hit another high. Just a week after our last record-breaking day, we had another one, scoring a fine 150 new members in one blistering 24 hours.

For those of you who enjoy expanding your knowledge with useless trivia, five of our top ten days ever have been in January 2007. It's gonna be a good year:) Anyone want to venture a guess as to when we'll get our 100,000th member?

New: Upload GIFs and PNGs

The photo upload feature on Travellerspoint has been upgraded to allow images in gif and png format.

Now you can upload files in gif and png format as well as jpg.

Both these formats can be particularly useful when designing a blog. Most photographers will work with jpg, so it won't affect photo uploads a great deal. But when saving graphics, both png and gif have certain characteristics that make them preferable at times.

My Mac saves screen grabs in png format, so this makes it easier to upload them to Travellerspoint if I feel like it ;)

In the Press (again)...

Travel Rants

semi-overcast 3 °C

When it rains, it pours!

After Eric's post on my interview at Folksonomy, there's another interview that's hit the trogosphere (hey, who says I can't make up that word?!). Darren Cronian of Travel Rants is the unlucky chap that had the dubious honour of interviewing me this time.

It's nice and short, so don't worry, you can read the whole thing here and not get bored!

In the press...

Sam on Folksonomy!

If you head over to Folksonomy there's an interview with Sam. Folksonomy is a site that deals with Web 2.0 related topics and has featured interviews with the creators of sites like Wikipedia and Digg. And now Sam :)

In the interview, Sam talks about some of the challenges Travellerspoint faced in its early days, how it managed to grow and what lies ahead for the following year...

Travellerspoint reunions

bringing the people together...

sunny 27 °C

It's always fun to google your name and see what comes up. Funnily enough, the first thing I see for my name is my Travellerspoint profile page! I wonder how many of you that's true for as well...

Every now and then we hear from members who have googled their name and discovered they're listed on our Lost Friends list. Here's one example:

Hi You all at Travelerspoint!

Today in the morning I finally got a message from M, the guy I've been searching through your page since AGES!! He had been so bored that he googled himself and found the Reunionlink to your site. We met in China 11 years ago and suddenly the contact was lost. He's from Britain but has been living overseas a lot in these years. I have mainly been in Germany, studied and started working. Without your help we wouldn't have gotten in contact again, so thank You very much for the site.

With the best wishes for all of You,

Corinna

And here's another email Sam received from a member this week.

I want to thank you for finding a long lost friend for me.

In 1969 I met A B.He had travelled from Turkey to England to do some voluntary work for an organisation I was involved in. In 1975 I met him again but then I lost contact with him believing he had gone to America.

I put a message out on your board but I didn't click the link which would have sent me an email if he responded.

By chance one evening earlier this year I was bored and put my own name into Google Search. I went from page 1 to 2 to 5 to 27 and there I saw the message: A B is looking for J G. The link was to Travellerspoint.

He had responded a year ago.

I immediately emailed him and he replied within hours. We are now in regular contact. I have been to visit him and he will be coming to see me soon.

Thank you very much. I hadn't seen him for 31 years!
J G

Ain't reunion grand?

If you're searching for a lost travel friend, go to the Reunion section of the website and run a search for their name. If you can't find them, pop them on our Lost Friends list.
